# REIS v2.0 Features Overview

## Introduction

REIS v2.0 represents a major evolution of the Roadmap Execution & Implementation System. Building on the proven v1.x foundation, v2.0 introduces wave-based execution, smart checkpoints, comprehensive configuration, metrics tracking, and visualization - making systematic development more powerful, predictable, and enjoyable.

### Design Philosophy

REIS v2.0 was built with these principles:

- **Backward Compatible** - All v1.x workflows work unchanged
- **Opt-In Enhancement** - New features are optional enhancements
- **Developer-First** - Designed for real developer workflows
- **Data-Driven** - Metrics inform better planning
- **Resilient** - Interruptions and failures are expected, not exceptional

### What's New

- 🌊 **Wave Execution** - Structured execution in sequential waves
- 💾 **Checkpoints** - Save points you can resume from
- ⚙️ **Configuration System** - Customize REIS behavior
- 📊 **Metrics Tracking** - Track success rates and durations
- 📈 **Visualization** - See progress at a glance
- ✅ **Plan Validation** - Catch issues before execution
- 🔧 **Enhanced Commands** - New and improved commands

## Feature Deep Dive

### 🌊 Wave Execution

**What it does:** Groups tasks into sequential waves with automatic checkpoints between them.

**Why it matters:**
- Better progress tracking with clear milestones
- Safer interruption and resume
- Reduced context rot (smaller execution units)
- Easier state management
- Natural rhythm to development

**How to use:**

Define waves in PLAN.md:
```markdown
## Wave 1: Foundation [S]
- Create project structure
- Set up configuration
## Wave 2: Core Features [M]
- Implement main functionality
- Add validation
- Write tests
## Wave 3: Polish [S]
- Add documentation
- Refactor code
```

Execute with waves:
```bash
reis execute-plan
```

**Output:**
```
🌊 Wave 1: Foundation [S]
  ✓ Create project structure
  ✓ Set up configuration
  ✓ Wave 1 complete (18 minutes)
  💾 Checkpoint created
🌊 Wave 2: Core Features [M]
  ✓ Implement main functionality
  ✓ Add validation
  ✓ Write tests
  ✓ Wave 2 complete (52 minutes)
  💾 Checkpoint created
🌊 Wave 3: Polish [S]
  ✓ Add documentation
  ✓ Refactor code
  ✓ Wave 3 complete (22 minutes)
  💾 Checkpoint created
✅ All waves complete! Total: 92 minutes
```

**Related Commands:**
- `reis execute-plan` - Execute with wave-based flow
- `reis visualize --type progress` - Visualize wave progress

**Learn More:** [WAVE_EXECUTION.md](WAVE_EXECUTION.md)

### 💾 Smart Checkpoints

**What it does:** Creates save points you can resume from, with full context.

**Why it matters:**
- Resume work after interruptions
- Experiment without fear
- Track progress milestones
- Roll back to known-good states
- Review changes incrementally

**How to use:**

**Automatic checkpoints** (created between waves):
```bash
reis execute-plan
# Checkpoints created automatically
```

**Manual checkpoints** (create anytime):
```bash
reis checkpoint "Auth system complete - ready for frontend"
```

**List checkpoints:**
```bash
reis checkpoint --list
```

**Output:**
```
📋 Checkpoints:
1. checkpoint-2026-01-18-1 (2 hours ago)
   Wave 1: Foundation complete
2. checkpoint-2026-01-18-2 (1 hour ago)
   Wave 2: Core Implementation complete
3. checkpoint-2026-01-18-3 (15 minutes ago)
   Manual: Auth system complete
📍 Currently at: checkpoint-2026-01-18-3
```

**Resume from checkpoint:**
```bash
# Smart resume (analyzes context)
reis resume
# Resume from specific checkpoint
reis resume --from checkpoint-2026-01-18-2
```

**Example workflow:**
```bash
# Morning: Resume from yesterday
reis resume
# Work...
# Lunch: Save progress
reis checkpoint "Morning work complete"
# Afternoon: Continue...
# Before risky refactor
reis checkpoint "Before refactor - all tests passing"
# Refactor...
# If it fails
reis resume --from checkpoint-2026-01-18-5
```

**Related Commands:**
- `reis checkpoint [message]` - Create checkpoint
- `reis checkpoint --list` - List all checkpoints
- `reis resume` - Smart resume
- `reis resume --from <id>` - Resume from specific checkpoint

**Learn More:** [CHECKPOINTS.md](CHECKPOINTS.md)

### ⚙️ Configuration System

**What it does:** Customize REIS behavior via `reis.config.js` file.

**Why it matters:**
- Adapt REIS to your workflow
- Team-wide consistency
- Per-project customization
- Sensible defaults, full control

**How to use:**

**Initialize configuration:**
```bash
reis config init
```

**Customize settings:**
```javascript
// reis.config.js
module.exports = {
  waves: {
    defaultSize: 'medium',
    autoCheckpoint: true
  },
  git: {
    autoCommit: true,
    commitMessagePrefix: '[REIS]'
  },
  output: {
    level: 'verbose',
    colorize: true
  }
};
```

**View configuration:**
```bash
reis config show
```

**Validate configuration:**
```bash
reis config validate
```

**Common configurations:**

**Team configuration:**
```javascript
module.exports = {
  git: {
    autoCommit: true,
    requireCleanTree: true,
  }
};
```

**Solo developer:**

  waves: {
    defaultSize: 'large'
  },
  execution: {
    pauseOnDeviation: false
  },
  output: {
    level: 'verbose'
  }
};
```
**CI/CD:**
```javascript
module.exports = {
  git: {
    autoCommit: false
  },
  execution: {
    interactive: false,
    autoRetry: true
  },
  output: {

### ✅ Plan Validation

**What it does:** Validates PLAN.md structure and catches issues before execution.

**Why it matters:**
- Catch errors early
- Prevent execution failures
- Ensure plan completeness
- Validate dependencies
- Improve plan quality

**How to use:**

**Automatic validation** (before execution):
```bash
reis execute-plan
# Validation runs automatically
```

**Manual validation:**
```bash
reis validate plan.md
```

**Output (valid plan):**
```
✓ Plan structure valid
✓ All waves defined correctly
✓ No circular dependencies
✓ All tasks have required fields
✓ File paths valid
✅ Plan is valid and ready for execution
```

**Output (invalid plan):**
```
❌ Plan Validation Errors:
1. Wave 2 has circular dependency with Wave 3
   Fix: Remove circular dependency
2. Task "Implement auth" missing verification steps
   Fix: Add <verify> section to task
3. Wave 4 depends on non-existent Wave 5
   Fix: Check wave dependencies
⚠️  2 warnings:
- Wave 1 has no size indicator (assuming medium)
- Phase has no success criteria
Fix these issues before running: reis execute-plan
```

**What's validated:**
- Wave structure and syntax
- Task completeness (files, actions, verification)
- Dependency correctness
- Circular dependency detection
- File path existence (optional)
- Success criteria presence
- Verification step presence

**Configuration:**
```javascript
// reis.config.js
module.exports = {
  validation: {
    validateBeforeExecution: true,
    strict: false,              // Treat warnings as errors
    checkCircularDeps: true,
    checkFileExists: false      // Validate file paths
  }
};
```

**Related Commands:**
- `reis validate <file>` - Validate specific plan
- `reis execute-plan` - Includes automatic validation
