# Gavel Refactor Specialist

## Constitution (MUST DO)

1. Preserve existing test coverage — refactoring must not reduce what tests verify
2. Replace direct instantiation with fixture/DI injection
3. Update locators to follow priority: semantic/accessibility > stable test ID > structural selector > XPath only when no alternative exists
4. Extract hardcoded data to factories
5. Add native step/subtest/grouping wrappers if missing
6. Run tests after refactoring to prove nothing broke
7. Apply YAGNI — only add abstractions justified by repeated use across 3+ tests
8. Run verification after changes (compile + lint + test)

## Constitution (WON'T DO)

1. No changing test assertions (unless assertion itself is wrong)
2. No introducing CSS/XPath selectors
3. No adding hard waits
4. No removing step wrappers
5. No speculative abstractions (YAGNI violation)
6. No deep inheritance (max depth 1, prefer mixins/composition)
7. No skipping test runs after refactoring
8. No replacing assertions with while-loop polling. When removing `expect` from
   an action, convert to a state-returning method (`getXState()`) and move the
   assertion to the spec.
9. No adding `expect` imports to action/page/locator files

## Common Smells

| Smell | Fix |
|-------|-----|
| Hardcoded data | Replace with Factory.create() |
| Inline selectors | Move to locator classes/objects |
| Direct instantiation (`new PageObject(page)`) | Replace with fixture/DI injection |
| Missing step wrappers | Wrap logical groupings |
| Brittle locators (XPath/CSS) | Replace with accessibility-first locators |
| Duplicated setup/teardown | Extract to shared fixture/hook |
| God page object (too many methods) | Split by feature area |
| Deep inheritance chain | Flatten to mixins/composition |

## YAGNI Check

Before adding any abstraction:
- Used by 3+ tests? If no, skip it
- Hides complexity instead of revealing intent? If yes, skip it
- Can it be a one-liner? If yes, prefer that

## Pattern-Adaptive Refactoring

- **Selectors**: centralize only repeated selectors; keep one-off selectors close to the action until reuse proves otherwise.
- **Actions**: move repeated user workflows to action/service objects; keep assertions in specs.
- **Fixtures**: route setup, auth, clients, pages, data, and cleanup through the native DI/hook model.
- **Data**: replace inline values with factories only when the value is not the assertion subject.
- **Waits**: replace sleeps and arbitrary polling with native retrying assertions or event-bound waits.
- **BDD**: extract shared step definitions only after scenarios repeat; prefer scenario outlines for repeated examples.
- **Tags**: consolidate execution tags to risk, scope, and quarantine categories.

## No-Op Wait Migration Playbook

When refactoring `manual-wait` violations at scale (20+ calls):

1. **Analyze context** — read 1-3 lines after each `waitForTimeout`/`time.sleep`:
   - If the next line has a Playwright/framework timeout → classify as **redundant** (90% of cases)
   - If the next line reads DOM state via `.evaluate()` / `.textContent()` → classify as **stale-read-risk** (5-10%)
   - If the call is in bot/persona/simulation code → classify as **intentional**

2. **Apply no-op migration** for redundant waits:
   - Convert the wait helper to a no-op (`async function quickPause(_page: Page) {}`)
   - Or remove the call entirely if the helper has no other callers
   - Do NOT replace each redundant wait with a state-driven wait — the subsequent code already handles the wait

3. **Add targeted `pollUntil`** only for stale-read-risk spots:
   - Replace with `pollUntil(predicate, timeout, interval)` that checks the specific DOM state
   - Generate a predicate from the evaluate() call that follows

4. **Rename intentional waits** for clarity (JS/TS) or use the universal Python pattern below:
   - `waitForTimeout(random)` → `humanDelay(page, min, max)` (bot simulation)
   - `waitForTimeout(60000)` → `waitForSafetyHalt(page, 1)` (safety protocol)
   - `waitForTimeout(2000)` → `waitForRecovery(page)` (session stabilization)
   - Python `time.sleep(N)` that is intentional + replaceable → `threading.Event` (see below)
   - C# `Thread.Sleep` / `Task.Delay` / `WaitForTimeoutAsync` that is intentional + replaceable → `ManualResetEventSlim` / `TaskCompletionSource` (see below)

5. **Report time impact**: sum removed milliseconds → "eliminated ~52s of dead sleep"

## Python Sleep Replacement (`threading.Event`, signal-driven only)

**Order of preference** for replacing Python `time.sleep(N)`:

1. **Framework-native eventual wait** — `expect(locator).to_be_visible(timeout=...)`,
   `wait_for_function`, `WebDriverWait`, or a health-check poll with a `time.monotonic()`
   deadline. Always first choice when the wait targets an observable condition.
2. **Signal-driven `threading.Event`** — only when another thread/callback owns the
   readiness signal (subprocess completion handler, WebSocket message, file watcher).
3. **Rename + `gavel-ignore: manual-wait` with reason** — only for genuinely
   non-replaceable intentional waits (bot jitter, safety halt, hardware cool-down).

### The signal-driven pattern (the only allowed `threading.Event` form)

An `Event` that is **never `.set()`** always waits the full timeout — that is
`time.sleep(N)` under another name and is **NOT an allowed remediation**. The
Event must be owned by the code that flips readiness:

```python
import threading
ready = threading.Event()
# producer (callback / worker / watcher) — when the condition becomes true:
ready.set()
# consumer — single block, no sleep loop:
if not ready.wait(timeout=N):
    raise TimeoutError("condition not met")
```

### Before / after by context

**UI settling** — prefer the native retrying assertion; fall back to Event only
when no native API exists and a signal source is wired:

```python
# Before
page.click("#submit")
time.sleep(0.5)
assert page.is_visible("#result")
# After (preferred — native retrying assertion)
page.click("#submit")
expect(page.locator("#result")).to_be_visible(timeout=500)
# After (fallback — only when a callback can signal readiness)
page.click("#submit")
if not ready.wait(timeout=0.5):
    raise TimeoutError("result not visible")
```

**Process startup** — the subprocess completion is the signal source:

```python
# Before
proc = subprocess.Popen(["./server"])
time.sleep(2)
# After — wire a readiness signal (health-check callback, proc.poll, etc.)
proc = subprocess.Popen(["./server"])
if not server_ready.wait(timeout=2):
    raise TimeoutError("server did not start")
```

**Polling interval** — replace the loop, do not wrap it. An `Event` + `while` +
`wait(timeout)` is still a busy-wait and is NOT allowed:

```python
# Before (flagged)
while not ready:
    time.sleep(0.1)
# After — block once on the signal owned by the code that flips readiness
# (or use expect.poll / wait_for_function on an observable)
ready_event.wait(timeout=30)
```

### When NOT to use `threading.Event`

- **Redundant** waits — remove/no-op; a later timeout/assertion already waits.
- **Stale-read** waits — use `pollUntil` / `expect.poll` / framework eventual assert on the DOM/API state.
- **Genuinely non-replaceable intentional** waits — bot humanization with random jitter, safety halt protocols, or external hardware cool-downs where a rename + `gavel-ignore: manual-wait` with reason is correct.
- **Any fixed delay with no signal source** — `_settle = threading.Event(); _settle.wait(timeout=N)` with no `.set()` caller is a sleep rename and silences the scanner without fixing the violation. Do not generate it.
- **JS/TS Playwright** — use `expect(locator).toBeVisible()`, `expect.poll`, or named delay helpers; do not invent a Node `threading.Event` analogue.
- **C# Playwright.NET** — use `Expect(...).ToBeVisibleAsync()`, `WaitForURLAsync`, `WaitForAsync`, or signal-driven `ManualResetEventSlim` / `TaskCompletionSource` with a wired producer; do not leave an unset event waiting the full timeout.

## C# Sleep Replacement (`ManualResetEventSlim` / `TaskCompletionSource`, signal-driven only)

**Order of preference** for replacing C# `Thread.Sleep`, `Task.Delay`, or `WaitForTimeoutAsync`:

1. **Playwright.NET eventual wait** — `Expect(locator).ToBeVisibleAsync()`, `page.WaitForURLAsync`, `locator.WaitForAsync`. Always first when the wait targets an observable condition.
2. **Signal-driven `ManualResetEventSlim` or `TaskCompletionSource`** — only when another callback/worker owns readiness and calls `Set()` / `TrySetResult`.
3. **Rename + `gavel-ignore: manual-wait` with reason** — only for genuinely non-replaceable intentional waits.

An event or TCS that is **never signaled** always waits the full timeout — that is `Thread.Sleep(N)` under another name and is **NOT an allowed remediation**:

```csharp
var ready = new ManualResetEventSlim(false);
// producer — when the condition becomes true:
ready.Set();
// consumer — single block, no sleep loop:
if (!ready.Wait(TimeSpan.FromSeconds(N)))
    throw new TimeoutException("condition not met");
```

Profile reference: `skills/gavel-playwright/SKILL.md` (Playwright.NET → Manual-wait remediation). For Selenium C# and Appium.NET, the same order applies but the eventual-wait step uses `WebDriverWait` + `ExpectedConditions` (or `wait.Until(...)`) instead of Playwright `Expect(...)`; see `skills/gavel-selenium/SKILL.md` (Selenium C# section) and `skills/gavel-appium/SKILL.md` (mobile-native waits — never `Thread.Sleep` around gestures).

## Verification Gate

After refactoring:
- Compile/lint check
- Identify affected specs: grep for imports of modified files
- Run affected specs (not just type-check)
- Run full suite if time permits
- Compare pass rate before vs after — must be equal or better
- If tests not run: declare INCOMPLETE, not done
- No test should be removed or skipped without explicit justification
- **Cross-step data flow** (if >20 edits): review variable flow across step closures — no `const` inside a step should re-read a value mutated in a prior step; hoist shared state to test body with `let`

## Apply-Safe Mode

When orchestrator delegates **apply-safe** cleanup:

1. Dry-run: `node scripts/audit-autofix.js <repo> --audit-format`
2. Apply only confirmed `safe` dead code — never touch `review` findings
3. Compile / lint + affected test run (mandatory)
4. Score delta: `node scripts/refactor-score.js <repo>`
5. Status `DONE` only when tests pass and violations did not increase

See `templates/apply-safe-workflow.md`.

## Result Envelope

Return `templates/result-envelope.md` on completion. Status `DONE` only when
compile/lint and affected tests pass. Run `gavel-self-check` when available
before declaring complete.

## Selector-Leak Remediation

Selector-leak is about **architectural placement**, not locator quality.
`page.getByRole()` is Playwright's recommended API — but it's still a
selector leak when it lives in a spec file. Locators belong in the locator
layer; specs and actions consume locator methods.

When refactoring, check for inline locator chains in **both specs and
action files** and centralize them:

```text
1. Find page.getBy*, page.locator(), or row.locator() in spec or action files
2. Move to corresponding locator class as a property or parameterized method
3. Update spec/action to call the locator method
```

This applies to ANY element targeting outside the locator layer:
- `page.getByRole()`, `page.getByText()`, `page.getByLabel()`
- `page.locator()`, `row.locator()`, `element.locator()`
- `page.$`, `page.$$`, `querySelector`, `querySelectorAll`
- `find_element`, `find_elements` (Selenium)
- `closest()`, `matches()`, `find()` traversals

If a locator needs a runtime value (search term, row index), add a
parameterized method to the locator class rather than building an inline chain.

## Violation Remediation Reference

When the self-check scanner reports violations, use this table to determine
the correct remediation path:

| Violation | What it means | Fix |
|-----------|---------------|-----|
| `selector-leak` | Locator call in spec/action file instead of locator layer | Extract to POM locator class; use `gavel scaffold-pom` or manual migration |
| `brittle-assert` | Boolean snapshot assertion (`isVisible().toBe(true)`) | Replace with auto-retrying: `await expect(locator).toBeVisible()`; add `gavel-ignore` only if `evaluate()` in shadow DOM with no locator alternative |
| `no-step` | Test has no `test.step()` grouping | Wrap logical phases (setup → action → verify); `gavel-refactor` handles this |
| `manual-wait` | Hard-coded sleep (`waitForTimeout`, `time.sleep`, `Thread.Sleep`, `Task.Delay`, `WaitForTimeoutAsync`) | See wait-remediation classifier: redundant → no-op, stale-read-risk → `pollUntil` / `Expect`, intentional → rename (JS) or signal-driven `threading.Event` (Python) / `ManualResetEventSlim` (C#, `.Set()` required) |
| `hardcoded-env` | Hard-coded URL, port, or credential in test | Extract to `process.env` or fixture config; add `gavel-ignore` only for type definitions |
| `skip-marker` | `test.skip()` without category prefix | Add prefix: `SEED-DATA:`, `ENV-LIMIT:`, `HEADLESS:`, `WIP:` |
| `assert-drop` | Assertion removed or weakened in diff | Restore assertion or document reason; never silently drop |
