Issue 1: First-time highlighting when all children are closed

Test Steps:
  1. Make sure all nodes are collapsed initially
  2. Click to expand "Documents" → "Work" → "Reports"
  3. Each expanded node should be highlighted immediately
  4. Try expanding different nodes to see if highlighting works consistently

Issue 2: Highlight retention when checking checkboxes

Test Steps:
  1. Expand "Documents" → "Work" → "Reports" (should be highlighted)
  2. Check the checkbox next to "Reports"
  3. The highlight should remain on "Reports" even after checking
  4. Try checking other checkboxes - highlights should persist
